DEFENDING Bulawayo Basketball League champions Southern Mavericks moved two places up the table to second after a 59-38 win over City Knights on Saturday. Mavericks are on 25 points from 15 games and trail pacesetters Giants, who suffered a 47-50 defeat to Highlanders, by a point with three rounds of matches before the season ends.
Mthokozisi Sibanda’s 21 basket points kept Mavericks’ title hopes alive, meaning the championship race will go to the wire.
One of Mavericks’ remaining matches is against table toppers Giants and the game, which is likely to be a title decider, is set for the last day of the season.
Besides Sibanda, some of Mavericks’ players expected to play key roles in the remaining games include Liberty Nyathi, Tafadzwa Gonyora and Masimba Wemba.
Giants, whose top scorer in their 47-50 defeat by Highlanders was Muchengeti Hamandishe, will pin their title hopes on Mthokozisi Sithole, Wellington Kasosera, William Muchuchuti and Mike Zvoushe.
Just like the men’s category, the women’s title race will also go to the wire.
Seldom Woods’ 19 basket points inspired Lakers Seniors to a 59-13 win over Lakers Juniors.
Seniors have amassed 28 points and are a point behind leaders and defending champions Southern Mavericks, who were inactive at the weekend.
