THE southern region is on the verge of reviving wheelchair basketball, with former players set to meet at Freedom House on Sunday to create a new executive committee that will represent them at national level.
“This is one of the moves we are making to bring the game back to life. We are appealing to all athletes interested in basketball to meet so that we select a new executive.
“As the disabled society, we should be united for our sport to be just like any other sport,” said former national wheelchair basketball president Walter Ndlovu.
“We want to select the best candidates, who are knowledgeable in wheelchair basketball and will help to develop the sport in the country. After the committee has been selected, we are going to communicate with Harare so that we create one strong national body,” he said.
Ndlovu said aspiring committee members must have at least five years experience in the sport and be able to operate without any bias.
Zimbabwe was once a superpower in wheelchair basketball, with the senior men’s team ranked fourth in Africa, while the junior men’s team was ranked third.
The sport has collapsed and there is no running wheelchair basketball league — @khumzallen.
