RESIDENTS of Harare South suburb, Southlea Park, have urged the city council to address the lack of services and infrastructure in their community.
They claim that the consortium responsible for providing services is not maintaining the area, leading to issues such as bad roads, poor sewer system, poorly constructed toilets and no garbage collection, which poses a health hazard due to the risk of cholera.
The residents further stated that there are no active committees to represent their grievances, and land barons are causing confusion and double allocations of land.
If left unaddressed, residents said the situation will continue to harm their well-being in the long term.
“People are constructing their own toilets close to water wells, and this poses a serious health hazard considering that there have been cholera outbreaks in the city.
“To make matters worse, we have no access to clean and safe water,” she a resident.
Another resident, Chiedza Simboti, said they have been complaining about the same problems every year and nothing was being done.
“Residents’ associations do not take their responsibilities seriously. Many people have been affected, and if the matter is not dealt with urgently, more harm will be caused,” she said.
