THE end of season Spar Summer Sevens Series kicks off today with eight teams affiliated to the Matabeleland Rugby Football Board battling it out for four slots to enable them to progress to the next stage.
Busters, Old Miltonians, Western Panthers, Bulldogs, Zvishavane Bulls, Gweru Sports Club, Southern Region Academy and Western Suburbs will compete at Bulawayo’s ceremonial home of rugby, Hartsfield Stadium.
The Spar Summer Sevens Series will run for three weeks and next week will see the top four Bulawayo teams clashing with their Northern Region counterparts in Harare before the final set for November 15.
MRFB spokesman Simba Dangah said they were expecting top drawer battles as players will be aiming for the final so that they enhance their chances of making it into the Cheetahs’ squad to play in the CAR Sevens Championship to be held in Harare at the end of the month.
“This is an exciting time for our rugby because after the collapse of the National Rugby League programme, players have had to train on their own waiting for the Spar Summer Sevens competition. What makes this tournament even more intriguing is the fact that it’s being used to identify players that might represent the country at the CAR Sevens Championship set for November 29 to December 1,” he said.
Busters are favourites to win the Southern Region competition having sent warning shots last weekend when they won the Slimfield Memorial Sevens tournament in Gweru.
