Finance Minister Tendai Biti has accused the SPB of awarding tenders to incompetent companies seriously disrupting Government work.
Minister Biti said this when he appeared before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Budget, Finance and Investment Promotion on Monday.
Contacted for comment yesterday, Mr Kuwaza became livid saying he should have been contacted before the story was published. “Why did you write the story without contacting me? You have an agenda handiti. Hauna musoro iwe,” he said.
On Monday, Minister Biti and the committee expressed their displeasure at the way the SPB was awarding tenders.
He said the SPB had become “a national crisis. “They have become a fetter, ‘chikwambo chaicho’. They are busy denying development in the country,” said Minister Biti.
He said some of the companies that were awarded tenders by the SPB did not have capacity.
Committee chairperson, Cde Paddy Zhanda (Zanu-PF) said there was a possibility that some businesspeople knew about tenders before they were made public.
Several bidders have challenged the SPB’s tender awards in the past.
A local company recently took the SPB to the Administrative Court challenging a tender award to a foreign company that charged higher prices for pre paid meters.
