Spear Capital eyes FMCG sector

Scandinavian Private Equity firm, Spear Capital is eyeing more investments in the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector after completing the 30 percent acquisition of Dendairy Private Limited this year.

Spear Capital’s deal principal and head of corporate communications Mr Muvirimi Kupara told The Herald Business that as a sub-Saharan fund the company is looking at opportunities that gel with their investment objectives.

“As a sub-Saharan fund we are actively seeking opportunities that gel with our core investment objectives and offer real returns for our investors. And with Zimbabwe being one of our key target markets we are keen to explore opportunities for investment in the country,” said Mr Kupara.

He said Spear Capital is targeting investments in the FMCG segments as well as in the value addition and manufacturing sector.

Mr Kupara said the company also has an eye towards investment in the financial services sector.

“We are open to investments in all sectors except primary agriculture and mining, but we do have an appetite for the value addition sections of those sectors,” said Mr Kupara.

Spear Capital is a pioneering Scandinavian backed sub-Saharan Africa focused private equity investment company seeking to invest in businesses that are positioned to benefit from the continued economic growth in sub-Saharan African countries.

The fund makes investments on behalf of Spear Africa Holdings, a Mauritian registered investment company.

Mr Kupara said Spear is exploring possibilities within the fast moving consumer goods, manufacturing and processing and financial services.

Zimbabwe’s economy might have been facing challenges driven by drought and collapse of industries in recent years but the country has remained resilient as new investments encouraged by expected growth in 2015 and a fall in inflation continue to register presence in the country.

Spear Capital’s objective is to achieve medium-term capital appreciation by investing in businesses in sub-Saharan Africa, which in their opinion of the investment have excellent growth and expansion prospects.

The company’s investment strategy is themed around investment opportunities and is partly sector specific.

The company was founded upon the principle that by building exceptional businesses through partnering with leading entrepreneurs and management teams, and supporting them through a combination of financial and operating expertise, the company can realise the full potential of its portfolio companies for the benefit of the investors.

Spear Capital has access to a significant pipeline through its network of advisors, investment committee, executive team and their African business network.
