SPECISS College Bulawayo has become the first non-formal college to be awarded the Secretary’s Bell Merit Award in Bulawayo.
The college was awarded a cash prize of $5 000 from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education for winning the celebrated award.
Presenting the award to Speciss College on Wednesday, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education,
Mrs Constance Chigwamba, commended the college for its contribution towards improving the quality of education in the country.
She commended Speciss College for being among the first institutions to computerise its services.
Mrs Chigwamba said: “Speciss College was one of the early colleges in Zimbabwe to appreciate the benefit of computerisation.
“Today I am informed the state-of-the-art computer system and network links all campuses and provides up to date information on students and other college activities enabling the staff to serve its clients in a manner no other Zimbabwe Open Distance Learning education institution is able to do.”
She said Speciss College had become a household name associated with quality education and training.
“Students come to Speciss College because of the quality of service,” she said.
Mrs Chigwamba said although the college had a distinguished reputation with Zimsec and Cambridge examinations it should concentrate more on Zimsec examinations which were local and relevant.
She urged the college to register with Hexco so that its professional courses are recognised nationally.
“Speciss College should register for Hexco examinations and ensure that Speciss certificates are recognised by Hexco,” said Mrs Chigwamba.
She congratulated the college for offering HIV and Aids lessons which resulted in more than a hundred students voluntarily testing for HIV and Aids.
