LOCAL sports management company Kyros Sports will next week host a speed training clinic at Innovate gym in Harare.

The clinic will be conducted by UK-based Zimbabwean track and field coach, Stanley “Fresh” Madiri, on May 28 and 29 and it is being sponsored by Old Mutual.

Kyros Sports business development director, Kisset Chirengende, said the clinic will involve various sport disciplines.

“It’s a speed training clinic and it involves all sports that involves speed — rugby, athletics, hockey and basketball. It’s pretty much for everyone who plays sport.

“Stan (Madiri) will be working on sorting out the technique.

“It’s a whole day for both days. The first day will be practical and we are also inviting coaches to come for the practical one. The second day it will be theory.

“We are expecting him to arrive from UK next Thursday. Old Mutual are sponsoring the event,” said Chirengende.

Kyros Sports business development director with focus on athletes, Nyasha Muchochomi, said their focus is more on upcoming athletes.

“We are targeting the young athletes with great potential to make it to the Olympics — 15-year-olds, 16-year-olds — particularly in the 400m, 800m, 100m. We are also talking about other sports. All those sports that require speed.

“He (Madiri) is going to focus more on the technique in terms of how to start blocks and maintain speed (for athletics). For other athletes he will focus on how to be explosive and better athletes,” said Muchochomi.

Muchochomi said they have also invited coaches and athletes from the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe Rugby Union, Hockey Association of Zimbabwe and will be extending their invitation to the Mighty Warriors, who are scheduled to represent the country at the Olympic Games in August.

Muchochomi said they believe this can contribute to the growth and improvement of sport locally.

“Rugby Union is bringing some of their coaches and athletes. We have made contact with the hockey association. This week we are going to extend our invitation to the girls that are going to the Rio Games for soccer.

“We are looking at top athletes in the schools system. It’s a small thing but it can help us,” said Muchochomi.

Muchochomi said rugby have already confirmed their participation and they are still waiting for response from the other associations.

When contacted by The Herald yesterday, Madiri confirmed that he will be coming down to Harare next week to hold this two-day speed training clinic in which participants will pay $20 to attend it.

“Yes, I’m coming back home next week to conduct this speed training clinic under Kyros Sports, who I understand have teamed-up with Old Mutual and I will be imparting some of the techniques that I’ve learnt during my stay here in the UK.

“I’m really looking forward to it and I think it will be exciting and interesting for all the participants,” Madiri said.
