A Bulawayo security guard employed at Securico Security Company yesterday died on the spot after he was hit by a car while trying to cycle across Leopold Takawira Avenue near his workplace. The incident occurred at about 2PM. Godwel Muvindi, 39, was reportedly knocked down by a Toyota Corona which was allegedly speeding.

When Chronicle arrived at the scene, Muvindi’s body was lying in a pool of blood on the road. The bicycle’s rear wheel was broken.
A witness said the driver of the Corona failed to apply brakes because she was speeding.

“I saw the vehicle hitting the man. It was moving very fast such that the driver failed to apply brakes. The man was thrown into the air and slammed against the windscreen before landing on the road,” said the witness who declined to be named.

The driver of the car, only identified as Tinell, 24, refused to narrate what had taken place. Her mother threatened the Chronicle news crew with unspecified action.
Another witness, Tholakele Ndlovu, said Muvindi was trying to turn right when the vehicle hit him.

Efforts to get a comment from the officer commanding Bulawayo Traffic Chief Superintendent Maxwell Chikunguru were fruitless as his phones were barred from receiving incoming calls.

Last week 19 people were injured, following an accident involving a commuter omnibus and a South Africa registered Toyota Corolla at Iminyela suburb.
The car rammed into the Magwegwe-bound commuter omnibus.
