adminJordan Spieth remained on course to win the first three major titles of the year after a third-round 66 saw him grab the clubhouse lead at The Open. On a day of benign weather and low scoring, American Spieth carded seven birdies in his seven-under round for 11 under overall. Two-time champion Padraig Harrington (65) is one shot back, although with birdies flying in all over the Old Course, the leaderboard is in constant flux.
The Open will finish on a Monday for only the second time in its 155-year history because of adverse weather on Friday and Saturday.
For the third round yesterday the Old Course was almost defenceless, with barely a breath of wind, blue skies and warm sunshine on Scotland’s east coast.
Marc Leishman grabbed the early clubhouse lead after an eight-under-par 64 left him nine under but the Australian was soon gobbled up by the late starters.
Spain’s Sergio Garcia, still seeking his first major title, is also nine under after a 68, as is England’s former US Open champion Justin Rose (68) and American amateur Jordan Niebrugge (67).
Overnight leader Dustin Johnson and England’s Danny Willett were the last to tee off yesterday. — BBC Sport
