SPORTS personalities are showing the power of sports in uniting people from all walks of life and fighting for a common cause by helping mobilise resources for victims of Cyclone Idai, which has ravaged parts of the country.

Over 100 people have died while hundreds are missing in parts of Chimanimani and Chipinge that have been hit hard by the natural catastrophe.

Local sports personalities are doing their bit in pooling resources to assist victims.

National team batsman Sikandar Raza will donate his match fees to the cause.

“Get involved people please. People in Zimbabwe need our help, please donate generously . . . I will be donating the match fee and the winning bonus from the 20/ 20 finals,” tweeted Raza while former national team captain Brendan Taylor urged all Zimbabwe cricket players to come together and lend a helping hand.

Dynamos captain Edward Sadomba, under the banner of Footballers Union of Zimbabwe, also reached out to current and former footballers to come forth with help.

“On behalf of Footballers Union of Zimbabwe, I’m appealing to all current and former footballers to join hands to help Cyclone Idai victims. It could be in form of used clothes, money or pots, we are kindly asking you to help us in any way you can so that we can help our brothers and sisters who are in this predicament,” said Sadomba.

Throwing his weight behind the initiative to mobilise assistance for the affected communities, FC Platinum striker Mkhokheli Dube implored the soccer fraternity to stand up and be counted in the country’s time of need.

“In view of the devastating Cyclone Idai that has affected parts of Chimanimani and Chipinge, I call upon clubs and footballers to assist the people that have been affected, the support can be in the form of food, blankets, clothes and even money,” said Dube.

Bulawayo City FC spared a thought and prayer for the bereaved families.

“In yet another sad episode in our country, we join the nation in mourning the loss of life due to Cyclone Idai. Our prayers are with the bereaved families,” tweeted the club.

Hardlife Zvirekwi, a man who knows what it feels like to face adversity and pick yourself up, says no donation is too small thus the football fraternity must come together and assist the cyclone victims.

“No donation is too small; it can be cash, clothes or any form of donation, let’s do everything in our power to assist our fellow countrymen in this time of need,” he said.

The Msasa Rotary Club is co-ordinating all the Rotary Clubs in the country to assist the victims of the cyclone.

“We saw a number of different organisations wanting to act and bring relief to the Chimanimani- Chipinge area and we said we are better and stronger together.

“We decided to come together and make this thing better. Right now there are 30 tonnes of rice, 30 tonnes of mealie-meal, water and clothes. The response of the Zimbabwean people has just been incredible,” co-coordinator Tatenda Tavaziva said.
