THE Sports and Recreation Commission (ZRU) have suspended eight members of the Zimbabwe Rugby union National Executive Board as the leadership crisis within the sport continues to escalate.

This follows a directive sent out by the sports mother body calling for the resignation of the 16-member board after which only eight abided.

“The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) wishes to advise the public and rugby stakeholders

that the remaining members of the Zimbabwe Rugby union (ZRU) National Executive Board and

the National Executive Committee have been suspended from all forms of rugby administration

and activities in Zimbabwe including but not limited to holding office under the Zimbabwe Rugby

Union,” read a statement from the SRC.

“This follows a resolution of the Board of Commissioners of the Sports and Recreation

Commission (SRC) passed on the 9th of September 2025.

“The suspension is in terms of section 30 (1) (b) and (c) (i) as read with section 19 (a), (b) and (c), and paragraph 23 of the second schedule of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act (Chapter 25:15) and shall remain effective until the next Zimbabwe Rugby union elections.

“The Zimbabwe Rugby union is a registered National Association in terms of section 29(4) of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act.

“As a registered National Association, the ZRU has failed to conform to section 29(8)(b) of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act,” read the statement.

The SRC issued a show cause order on the September 4, which resulted in the resignation of 8 members of the ZRU National Executive Board.

No representations were filed by the remaining members of the ZRU National Executive Board, hence the SRC decided invoked section 30 of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act.
