Sports are rewiring learners’ mental health

WHEN most people think of mental health support, they immediately picture traditional therapy sessions and medication.

Yet sport remains one of the most underrated and effective coping mechanisms available to learners today.

At Wise Owl High School, sports like rugby, hockey, cricket, basketball and volleyball are often viewed merely as forms of entertainment. In reality, they act as a vital “reset button” for learners, drastically reducing stress and anxiety.

Furthermore, hitting the field serves as a natural shield against isolation.

Since these sports rely on a team dynamic, they combat loneliness by encouraging learners to connect and collaborate.

Ultimately, sports brighten up a learner’s day by cultivating commitment, determination, compassion and teamwork.

Learners’ mental wellbeing can be effectively prioritised through sport.

After all, sometimes the best mental health clinic is one that has a scoreboard.
