HARARE Sports Club captain Shingi Mpofu says they need to maintain their focus in the Northern Region Rugby League following another good outing at the weekend when they beat Old Johannians.
Sportivo are leading the championship race after winning all their six games this season.
Their skipper, Mpofu, was impressed by their 56-27 win over Old Johannians.
He said his side worked on their rucking and line-outs which had been their Achilles Heel early in the season.
Mpofu said they were improving in all areas.
“We had two days of training last week and we worked on our weaknesses,” said Mpofu.
“Our line-outs, as well as our rucking, have been very poor this season but on Saturday we did an excellent job in all the areas.”
Despite the loss, Old Johannians felt that their performance was good after it earned them a bonus point. Old Johannians are the only team who have managed to get a bonus point in the National Rugby League this season.
Coach Max Madziva said his boys fought bravely in that contest against the leading team in the country.
“We were playing at our home ground, ZB Sports Club, which made us relax but getting a bonus point against Sport Club, we are proud of that,” said Madziva.
“We are the first side to earn that point. I asked the boys to aim at scoring the tries in the early minutes of the game and they did that but it was hard for them to overpower Sportivo.
“We had young players with less experience and our opponents took advantage of that. Five players in the Sports Club team play for the Zimbabwe national team and I guess that makes them a stronger side.”
