AS part of its commitment to tackling the pervasive problem of drug abuse and empowering communities to build healthier, more resilient futures, NetOne, one of the country’s leading communications providers, is using the transformative power of sports to drive positive change and sustainable development in the country’s communities.

To ensure the initiative’s impact, the company partnered with the Ministry of Information Communication Technology, Postal, and Courier Services. They donated sports kits to Chikomba District in Mashonaland East Province.

In a statement the company said its impactful initiative in Chikomba District shines as a beacon of hope in the global fight against drug abuse.

“NetOne’s impactful initiative in Chikomba District shines as a beacon of hope in the global fight against drug abuse. Through the donation of sports kits and collaboration with Dr Tatenda Mavetera, the Minister of ICTPCS, this programme is more than just a response to the pressing issue of substance misuse; it is a commitment to fostering a culture of health, resilience, and community well-being.

“In 2024, NetOne celebrated National Heroes Day in a way that not only honoured the nation’s past but also created new heroes in the process.

“Partnering with the Chikomba community, the mobile network operator (MNO) supported a sports event and donated sporting equipment for both men and women in the area. This gesture, though seemingly small, is a powerful statement of NetOne’s belief in the transformative power of sports to drive positive change and sustainable development in Chikomba District,” the statement reads in part.

The company said its dedication to community upliftment is evident in its ongoing efforts to address critical social issues.

It said its commitment to Chikomba District in the fight against drug abuse is a powerful example of how corporate social responsibility (CSR) can create meaningful, lasting impact.

“The recent initiative in Chikomba District is a testament to the company’s commitment to tackling the pervasive problem of drug abuse head-on. This commitment is not just about providing resources but about empowering communities to build healthier, more resilient futures.

“Drug abuse is a significant global challenge that affects individuals of all ages and backgrounds. In Chikomba District, as in many parts of the world, the detrimental effects of substance abuse are far-reaching, leading to social and economic challenges that can destabilize entire communities.

“NetOne’s approach to combating this issue goes beyond mere intervention; it seeks to provide sustainable solutions that address the root causes of drug abuse,” further reads the statement.

Emphasising the organization’s unwavering dedication to community development, NetOne’s chief commercial officer, Learnmore Musunda, said: “NetOne has a longstanding commitment to supporting community development initiatives across Zimbabwe. By collaborating with local stakeholders and leveraging our resources, NetOne aims to empower and uplift underserved communities.”

NetOne acting head of marketing, Tatenda Makumborenga, said the impact of drug and substance abuse has far-reaching consequences on both youth and the broader community.

“The prevalence of drug abuse in society has had far-reaching consequences, impacting families, schools, and the overall well-being of the community.

“Addressing this crisis requires a multifaceted approach that involves education, support services, and community engagement. That is why we are here today as an organization, to also play our part in nation-building and creating sustainable communities,” he said.

He said sports serve as a crucial vehicle for fostering social cohesion and personal development. By engaging in sports activities, individuals can cultivate essential life skills such as discipline, leadership, and sportsmanship, which contribute to their overall well-being and sense of belonging.

“By addressing the issue through sports and community engagement, NetOne is not only helping to combat the immediate problem but also laying the groundwork for a healthier, more resilient future for Chikomba District and beyond”.
