BULAWAYO-based music producer Blessed Ngwenya, better known as Sky, has initiated a movement meant to promote Zimbabwean celebrities.
Bulawayo’s most famous artistes walk around in anonymity among the general populace of Bulawayo, something that Ngwenya wishes to correct with his ambitious project.
In an interview with this publication, the Plumtree-bred music producer who works under the Creative Media Worx, said: “I have put screens in and around Bulawayo. The screens show artistes and their respective art work and if anyone does recognise any of the artistes and sings along his or her songs they get a Greens Supermarket $15 grocery voucher as a prize.”
He added that the initiative was meant to cultivate a culture of embracing local artistes.
“There is a real need to embrace local famed people. We need to celebrate our own gifted people and with this kind of an initiative I’m simply saying against all odds it can still be done. We tend to celebrate people from elsewhere. We usually relate with celebrities from South Africa, Jamaica and United States of America and it defeats common sense. I hail from Plumtree and there should be no doubts that people from small towns can make a difference in society,” said the 24-year-old Ngweya.
The movement, which they wish to see broadcast on ZBC TV, is bankrolled by Hecter Chikore. So far, they have managed to install TV sets at Bulawayo Centre, Greens Supermarkets, Daflame, Liquor Hub and Cythinian, among other places.
Creative Media Worx is one of the six art promoters registered in the country and they believe they have a role in helping local celebrities to establish strong bonds with their followers. In 2017 Ngwenya co-ordinated a fundraising project for Nkulumane-based Qinisani Children’s Home orphanage.
