THE Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has called for the immediate resignation of the Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) national executive board and executive committee, citing incessant governance and leadership crisis.

In a letter addressed to Sifiso Made, the ZRU C.E.O, the SRC said failure to comply will see them take stringent measures.

“The Sports and Recreation Commission having noted the incessant governance and leadership challenges bedeviling the Zimbabwe Rugby Union which have ultimately brought the sport of rugby into disrepute, hereby recommends for the immediate resignation of the ZRU National Executive Board and the National Executive Committee.

“The SRC expects this recommendation to be implemented on or before Friday 5 September 2025, failure of which the Zimbabwe Rugby Union must show cause why the SRC must not invoke section 30 of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act (Chapter 25:15) by Monday 8 September,” read the letter.

Chapter 25:15 titled “Discipline of registered national associations”, grants the SRC the power to discipline national sporting associations.

The SRC recommendation comes a few days after Rugby Africa president Herbert Mensah called on ZRU acting president Tapfuma Parirenyatwa to reverse his resignation which was effective August 30.

“On behalf of Rugby Africa, I strongly recommend that the good Doctor remain as the acting president of ZRU until a smooth transition of this office has been attained and tangible stability within the Union has been reached. I believe this position, should it be left vacant, will be detrimental to the Union and rugby in the region as a whole,” said Mensah.

Parirenyatwa has since written to the ZRU board temporarily extending his term as acting president as they await the final ruling of Losson Mtongwiza who was suspended in May.

The final outcome of Mtongwiza’s hearing is expected next week. – @brandon_malvin
