adminCSDP manager Martin Dururu said they were expecting funds from the NIF to support the programme this year.
“At this stage the first four-year project has lapsed and we are now renewing our development co-operation with NIF. In the interim we expect to receive funding in the region of $400 000 to support CSDP activities in 2012,” he said.
Last year the SRC was given $415 000 by NIF for CSDP programmes.
The funding was used to buy sports equipment for the community clubs, supporting the activities of SRC co-ordinators and district sports committees, training of local organising committees of the National Paralympic Games, National Youth Games and the National Youth Education through Sport festival. The funds were also used to send two teams to the East Africa Cup where Bindura Under-13 Football Club were awarded the
Fairplay Team for fielding the correct aged players.
Dururu said they had fulfilled their mandate of taking sport to the people and were hoping to reach out to more districts and wards.
“The just-ended four-year project has seen SRC fulfilling its mandate of taking sport to the people and going forward.
“We seek to consolidate gains made and to open up new districts or wards to reach out to more people especially youth, women and the disabled,” he said.
Dururu said their aim this year was to expand the programme to an additional 20 districts in 10 provinces and support the formation of more sports clubs.
He said last year the programme facilitated the spread of organised sport to both rural and urban communities by facilitating the formation of community sports clubs, district associations, training coaches and administrators.
“Through the programme there was also organisation of sports festivals and galas in rural and urban communities. In addition we integrated life skills training for youths in all community sports club activities,” he said.
The CSDP programme was launched in 2008 to promote sport development at grassroots level.
It is a result of a partnership between the SRC, United Nations Children’s Fund, Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sport and the Norwegian Television Gala.
