ST Columba’s High School in Bulawayo is today hosting its annual Speech and Prize-Giving Day, with outstanding learners being rewarded for their academic achievements during the 2026 school year.
Learners from Form One to Six are being recognised for excelling in various subjects, with the ceremony also providing an opportunity for the school to reflect on its academic performance and future plans.
The school continues to maintain a strong academic record, having attained a 98.31 percent pass rate at Ordinary Level and an impressive 100 percent at Advanced Level in the 2024 examinations.
Delivering his speech as guest of honour, Professor Sifiso Mpofu said artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technology were becoming increasingly important in education and urged the school to take a leading role in embracing the changes.
He said the responsible use of technology could empower learners by giving them access to information and tools that enhance their studies.
“If used in the right way, digitisation has the potential to empower young minds and give them useful tools and all the information they need to improve their education,” he said.
School Development Committee (SDC) chairman Dr Sylvester Machingira congratulated the learners receiving prizes and encouraged those who did not make the list to work harder.
He said every learner had an opportunity to improve their performance and qualify for recognition in the coming year.
SDC deputy chairperson Benkosi “BKay” Maphosa said the school was prepared to embrace digital learning as it sought to keep pace with developments in education.
He said the school already had full internet connectivity and was upgrading its computer laboratory to meet the growing demands of digital learning.
“We are ready to adjust to the digital new normal in terms of delivering lessons to learners,” he said.
He said the improvements would help create an environment where learners could make greater use of technology in their studies.
