Stabbed over beer spill

A 24-year-old Nkayi man was stabbed six times after he spilled beer on his drinking mate while they were dancing to music.

This came to light when Xolani Khumalo (27) appeared before Nkayi magistrate Mr Temba Chimiso facing charges of assault.

Mr Chimiso sentenced Khumalo to 36 months imprisonment, of which 12 months were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour. Prosecuting Mr Winken Ngozo said on 9 September 2016 at around 9pm, Mannered Bhebhe was drinking beer with his friends at Jabulisani Business Centre. He stood up to dance when the DJ played his favourite song but little did he know that he was going to be attacked.

Bhebhe told the court that while he was dancing he felt something sharp piercing his skin and when he turned he saw Khumalo stabbing him with an Okapi knife. He told the court that Khumalo stabbed him four times in his chest, once on the waist and once on his left arm. Bhebhe bled until he became unconscious.

He managed to regain consciousness and was carried by his friends to his homestead but he did not report the case to the police. The court heard that when Bhebhe’s sister was trying to nurse his wounds, police officers who had got wind of the incident arrived to record a statement. They later arrested Khumalo at his homestead and recovered the knife he had used.
