All is set for the finals of the annual Chibuku Neshamwari traditional dance competition to be held at Harare Gardens this Saturday.
The provincial winners from the country’s ten provinces will battle it out for the first prize.A mixture of popular traditional dances from across the country such as mbakumba, mbende, bira, setapa and nyau, the traditional crowd favourite, will be on offer. Popular poet Albert Nyathi will provide entertainment at this year’s competition.
Groups competing at the finals are Budiriro Cultural Arts from Kadoma, Hwahwa School of Arts from Gweru, Dendera from Marondera, Chihodha How Mine from Umzingwane, Umkhankaso Wamajaya from Victoria Falls, Chivaraidze from Chipinge, Chisa from Chiredzi, Guruve Arts from Guruve and First Lilongwe.
In an interview, Chibuku brand manager Stan Meck said this year’s competition was special because it marked 50 years of supporting the arts and was therefore a golden jubilee celebrations competition.
“As a Zimbabwean company we value the privilege of promoting and celebrating our culture and heritage.
Through our Chibuku brand, we have been supporting the arts for the past 50 years hence the golden jubilee celebrations, he said.
Meck urged fans to come in their numbers to the special event which he said will be fun filled. Winners of this year’s golden jubilee celebrations competition will walk away with $4 000 while first and second runners up will get $3 000 and $2 000 respectively.
Delta Beverages, through the popular Chibuku beer brand, began sponsoring the dance competition at its inception in 1963.
The competition is run as a tripartite partnership between title sponsors Delta Beverages and technical partners National Arts Council as well as the Zimbabwe Traditional Dance Association.
