Stage set for cross-country championships

“All preparations have been done and we are waiting for the athletes to come and compete. We will be using these competitions to select our provincial team,” Mpofu said.

He said all athletes from all age groups even those outside the city were welcome to come and join the race.

“Several athletes from as far as Matabeleland South and Midlands have shown interest,” he said.

Cross country competitions will begin on Saturday followed by track and field events on Sunday.

Mpofu also urged schools to come in their numbers as there was a lot of talent waiting to be exposed.

“Our local schools must not shun this event because it is their chance to showcase their talent,” Mpofu said.

Meanwhile, schools in the city are preparing for the Inter-schools district track and field athletics competitions that are scheduled for the weekend at National University of Science and Technology (Nust).

Last weekend several schools held inter-house competitions.
