SCORES of budding footballers will converge at the Sunset Grounds at Mapfungautsi in Gokwe for an inaugural Under-20 football tournament on Saturday.
The tournament, going by the theme “Say No To Drugs” will be spearheaded by the Gokwe South Sports development committee headed by Albert Mbano and Blessing Jemani.
Sport and Recreation Development and Promotion Officer, Benson Moyo, said they were happy to host the first Gokwe South Under-20 soccer tournament.
“As Gokwe sports development committee we will be hosting an Under-20 soccer tournament at Sunset Grounds on Saturday.
“It has been noted with great concern that there has been a number of youth suicide cases which can be linked to drug and substance abuse and social problems so the tournament seeks to gather youths and educate them about the effects through sport.
“We will use sport as a tool to help reduce such incidents which we have observed with concern that the youths, especially the boys, are left out in getting social education, resulting in a number of suicides in Gokwe South.
“The committee sourced a soccer kit and balls which will be given as prizes on the day. Our target is to have Under-20 boys soccer clubs coming together and exchanging notes.
“We will engage the Gokwe ZRP Victim Friendly Unit, Vicaz, and all government ministries to come and deliver the intended message to youths,” said Moyo.
Winners of the tournament will walk away with a full football kit, including stockings.
