Matabeleland North Province is hosting the 26th International Day of Families alongside the Matabeleland North Provincial Business Expo, with officials stressing the central role of families in building strong communities and driving national development.
In his welcoming remarks, Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Richard Moyo said said the province was honoured to host the national commemoration.
The Minister applauded organisers for bringing the program to Matabeleland North, saying their presence demonstrated a shared commitment to strengthening family systems, promoting social cohesion and advancing inclusive development in line with Vision 2030 under President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Minister Moyo said the concurrent Business Expo highlighted the province’s investment and enterprise potential, urging stakeholders to explore opportunities on display.
“This event brings together Government, development partners, the private sector, civil society, community leaders and citizens from across the country to reflect on the central role of families in shaping strong, stable and productive society,” Minister Moyo said
In his presentation, Ministry of Health and Child Care representative Mr Bright Sibanda said families were the foundation of health and community well-being.
“It is within these families that children receive nutrition, care, protection, emotional support, and the guidance necessary for their physical, mental, and social well-being,” said Mr Sibanda.
He called for stronger efforts to reduce disparities that affect children’s health, growth and protection, adding that no child should be left behind due to place of birth, economic status, disability or social circumstances.
“Every child deserves access to quality health care, adequate nutrition, education, protection, and a safe environment,” he said, reaffirming Government’s commitment to child health and family well-being under National Development Strategy 2, Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals.
District Schools Inspector Mr Lovemore Ncube, representing the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, said this year’s theme “Families, Inequalities, and Child Well-Being” called for reflection on challenges such as poverty, unequal access to education, health care, technology and social services.
“Families are the first schools of values, discipline, love, respect, and cultural identity,” said Mr Ncube.
He noted that many families today face economic hardships, unemployment, substance abuse, child neglect, domestic violence and negative social media influence, which threaten children’s welfare and potential.
Mr Ncube said Government and stakeholders must work together on family-friendly policies and programs to protect children and strengthen families.
He added that schools remained committed to inclusive education, guidance and counseling, child protection and value-based learning, while urging parents and guardians to partner with schools.
“Investing in families is investing in the future of our nation. Together, let us build resilient families, empowered communities, and a brighter future for every child,” he said.
The event also brought in developmental partners, drug and substance abuse committies and church representatives to give their solidarity message on the International Day of Families.
