STAKEHOLDERS in Gwanda have donated groceries and blankets to Gwanda Old People’s Home as part of an initiative aimed at supporting the elderly in the town.
The fundraising effort seeks to ensure that elderly residents have access to essential items such as food, clothing, and blankets.
Gwanda Municipality proportional representation councilor Nomusa Sibanda, who led the initiative, explained that the idea was born from the realization that many elderly people in the town needed assistance.
The donation to the elderly home included 15 blankets and various grocery items.
Meanwhile, rehabilitation work is underway to improve the living conditions at the home, which had fallen into a poor state.
A solar-powered borehole has been installed at the institution, helping to alleviate previous water shortages. The home has also received new beds, had its walls repainted, and purchased new doors. Plans are in progress to upgrade the sewer reticulation system.
These rehabilitation efforts were prompted by a human rights committee proposal to shut down the home due to its deteriorating conditions.
Water shortages had also been hindering the sustainability of the institution’s income-generating projects.
Various stakeholders, led by the Department of Social Development, have joined forces to improve the state of the elderly home.
