adminbehalf at the launch of the Standard Chartered Bank Internship and Graduate Recruitment Programme last week, Labour and Social Services Minister Ms Paurina Mpariwa said this was critical if the students are to be relevant in formal employment.
She said the Standard Chartered programme provided a platform for students to gain the practical and technical know-how needed in a work environment.
“Within the prevailing economic trends where formal jobs are scarce, this internship will go a long way in giving students the required on-the-job training that most employers are looking for when they recruit new employees in order to cut on training costs,” she said.
Standard Chartered Bank Zimbabwe acting chief executive Mr Amos Manzai said the bank was committed to contributing significantly to social and developmental programmes either on its own or in partnership with other organisations focusing mainly on youth, education, health and environment.
“Today, it gives me great pleasure to be part of a process that will reward intelligent, committed, hardworking and deserving students being given a chance to work for Standard Chartered Bank, be it as interns or graduate trainees,” he said.
He said the international graduate training and internship programme had been running inconsistently for years hence they were now offering a structured programme in view of the demand from students seeking attachments.
The bank will recruit 20 students from various institutions for the internship programme and 10 for the graduate training programme drawn from different universities across the country each year.
