adminCHITUNGWIZA Municipality, which has been failing to settle ballooning salary arrears, has resolved to give its workers residential stands to offset what it owes them. Council owes the workers over $20 million. Town Clerk Dr George Makunde confirmed the development in an interview with The Herald yesterday.
He said they now awaited approval by the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing.
“As council we have already identified 1 030 residential stands to be allocated to our serving employees,” said Dr Makunde.
“We have since written to the parent ministry seeking its concurrence before the request is effected.”
Council workers have been restless over the failure by the town council to settle what it owes them. Last month they staged a demonstration at Town House demanding that council offsets the debt with residential stands. — HR.
