The nation’s popular commercial radio Star FM in conjunction with Lion Lager will host Beerfest Students Radio Activation on Friday starting from 5.30pm to 6pm on the “Lion Lager Raise Our Vibe Show”.
Lucky listeners stand a chance to win tickets to the concert featuring Nigerian pop star D’Banj, Uganda’s Bebe Cool as well as a host of Zimbabwean musicians among them Winky D, King Shaddy and Guspy Warrior.
Dubbed “Battle of Africa” the show slated for October 26 promises nothing short of fireworks as all the performing artistes are doing well on the airwaves with their chart- topping hits.
According to Patricia Murambinda, the marketing manager for Delta Beverages, students can win tickets on the show.
“To win tickets to the Beerfest, listeners would be asked to call in to the Raise Our Vibes Radio show. To ensure that the caller is indeed a tertiary student, they have to give their student ID number as a password.
“Thereafter, depending on which campus they belong to, they will be asked to name two of the three artistes that performed at their campus night.
“The winner will be referred to the nearest Delta Beverages Centre to collect their tickets. They have to present their student ID to redeem the tickets,” she said.
D’Banj aka the Kokomaster is no pushover as some fans think. In fact, he has a long list of hits which are sure to send the crowd into a frenzy.
For years, the Nigerian singer has been at the centre of the Mo’Hits Records stable, but now he’s struck out on his own with a new label and the compilation “D’Banj Presents DKM (D’ King’s Men)” (DB/G.O.O.D./Sony).
The album is an alluring contemporary pop with an emphasis on kingsize dance music, like the militarily efficient “Don’t Tell Me Nonsense” and the flash of last year’s excellent smash hit “Oliver Twist”.
He also has other hits such as “Suddenly”, “Fall In Love” and “Scape Goat” which are club bangers.
Early this year, the Nigerian thrilled fans at the closing ceremony of Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa with his acrobatic dance moves. He gave one of the best performances at the ceremony.
The same goes with Bebe Cool, whose real name is Moses Ssali. Although he is not well known in Zimbabwe, he is the sort of musician that you will love and remember long after the show because of his thrilling performances.
However, Zimbabwean hitmaker Winky D is expected to beat the foreign acts to it with his high-energy performances.
Winky D, Guspy Warrior and King Shafdy have already promised to give their best. The Ninja President, who has become a staple at the annual beer festival, said fans should expect “satisfaction”, when he takes to the stage.
“I want to warn my Nigerian brother that I do not do clashes, but as an intelligent artiste I am prepared to learn one or two things from him and he should also be prepared to learn a thing from me,” he said.
The dancehall star has in the past upstaged visiting international artistes. Last year, Popcaan literally curtain-raised for him when he gave a blast of a performance at the Harare International Conference Centre.
The beauty about the gig is that all the local artistes are on top of their game, with Guspy Warrior riding high with the song “Ita Seunononga” while King Shaddy’s “Machira Chete” is gaining ground.
Guspy Warrior, who is a first timer at the beer festival, said he would love to leave a lasting impression.
“I would like to thank my fans who are called Mafia 19 and everyone knows that ‘Ita Seunononga’ is the national anthem. I do not want to talk much, but what I can say is that I will give all my best,” he said.
Son to gospel musician Machanic Manyeruke, Guspy Warrior said he was grateful to the organisers for giving him the opportunity. Even controversial King Shaddy has promised a show to remember.
“Representing Makorokoza PaMusau, I feel honoured to perform at such a grand stage and I want to show people that I have come a long way,” he said.
With all the local acts promising to give it their all, the task is now on the international artistes to prove that they are worthy their salt.
