Star FM unravels hidden talent

EVERY morning Zimbabweans wake up and have breakfast with Star FM’s Breakfast Club — Nikki Ndoro and Napoleon ‘Napstar’ Nyanhi who share the low down about what is happening in different parts of the country.

The Breakfast Club duo broadcast live in Bulawayo this week as the fast-growing radio station based in Harare wanted to get closer to its listeners in other parts of the country.

Napstar said he was impressed by the quality of music Bulawayo artistes were churning out and promised to support them to grow their careers.

“The music in Bulawayo is very underrated, underutilised and not exposed. I think this is because there’s no station here where artistes can submit their music.

“There’s a lot of art and talent in the city that hasn’t been recognised yet it can make a difference in the country.

We met quite a lot of artistes here who we’ll continue giving airplay when we go back to Harare,” Napstar said.

Nikki who was visiting Bulawayo for the first time, said she was impressed by the warm reception she received.

“I’m so surprised that people in Bulawayo are bilingual as they can effortlessly shift from Ndebele to Shona and back. I’m grateful for the warmth that I got from people here,” she said.

Nikki said she was surprised by the amount of talent in the city.

“The music is fantastic, the artistes have talent and we didn’t know about that. I was impressed by that Luveve boy Cal_Vin. No wonder Cassper Nyovest wants to do a remix of his song Zikhuphani. That’s talent that needs to be tapped,” she said.

Nikki said she was inspired to be a radio presenter by DJ Munya, Peter Jones, Otis Fraser and Leander Kandiero.

“I used to listen to them and I remember when I received news that my mother had passed on, I was listening to DJ Munya on the grave yard shift on Power FM,” she said.

The married mother of one said she wanted to inspire those who listen to her shows.

“On radio I want to be a voice that people can identify with. My drive is to be an inspiration to the people who are listening. If I inspire people with what I do, I believe I’d have done something good on that day,” she said.

Nikki said being on radio was not a stroll in the park considering the hectic shift.

“My day starts at 4AM when we prepare the day’s script that we follow when we’re on air. On air we should be alert to anything that’s happening around us and give people accurate information,” she said.

The Breakfast Club returns to Harare today though part of the Star FM family is still in Bulawayo. The 3-6 Express with KVG and Phathisani “Mkwasha Mboko” Sibanda will be taking over with a live broadcast around the city’s shopping centres from Monday to Friday from 3PM to 6PM.
