MANCHESTER UNITED have reached an agreement with interim boss Michael Carrick to become the club’s permanent manager.
Carrick, 44, returned in January to Old Trafford, where he thrived as a player, and revived United as he led them back to the Champions League after six turbulent months under predecessor Ruben Amorim.
Man Utd were sixth in the Premier league table when the club legend was appointed but he transformed the team with ten wins and only two losses in his 15 matches that led to third place. The ex-Middlesbrough boss’ work attracted immense public support from players, fans, pundits and fellow United greats who insisted he deserved the job on a full-time basis.
And according to The Athletic, the Red Devils’ hierarchy share the same opinion as they reached a “broad agreement” with Carrick.
Talks are still ongoing between all parties to finalise contracts for the ex-England international and his backroom staff.
As SunSport reported, a two-year deal with the option to extend for another 12 months was proposed by the club to the popular head coach.
United minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe gave the go-ahead to chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox.
Other options had been considered, such as Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola, Aston Villa‘s Unai Emery, Fulham’s Marco Silva and Paris Saint-Germain’s Luis Enrique.
That is because Man Utd chiefs initially feared another case similar to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, whom Carrick replaced on a caretaker capacity back in 2021 and won two out of three matches of which he lost none.
Solskjaer also earned the job on a permanent basis after impressing as interim boss but soon fell out of favour following a series of hapless results.
But Carrick proved himself after making an instant impact that led to four consecutive wins upon his arrival. This comes after the ex-Tottenham star all-but confirmed his status as the Manchester giants’ manager next season.
Carrick said: “There’s two games to go, apart from that there’s not much else to say. The situation is pretty clear for us all. It’s a unique football club, a special club.
“I’m immensely proud to have come back and been a part of it, as a supporter and ex-player, as a pure supporter to be in a position to come back and help and move forward was important.
“To make a big step, and being back in the Champions League is good, we’re happy with the work we’ve done so far.” — Sun
