THE State has closed its case against a Harare couple, Clark Makoni and his wife Beverly Aisha, who are being accused of defrauding former Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor Gideon Gono.
The State led its last witness, Eric Chacha from the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission, who investigated the case.
The couple’s lawyer Admire Rubaya said he will be filing their application on July 22 and the prosecution said they will respond two days later.
Regional Magistrate Stanford Mambanje said he will deliver a ruling on the arguments on July 28. According to the State, Gono engaged the services of the couple in July 2017 to manage his businesses, including Valley Lodge. The State claims the couple forged a CR14 form for Valley Lodge (Pvt) Ltd in which Clark Makoni appointed himself a director and company secretary while Beverly Makoni was appointed a director.
Chacha claimed the couple changed signatories on the Valley Lodge ZB Bank account which they allegedly used to siphon money. In cross examination, he was asked to state the original signatories, whose names were allegedly changed, and he said they were Gono and Omar.
He was also asked if they had investigated the couple’s bank accounts to see if they received money from Valley Lodge and he said his investigation found out that money was being transferred to Ark Properties.
The couple has described the allegations as malicious and on Friday they claimed this was a hatchet job to tarnish their images.
They said the offence they are being accused of occurred in Mutare but the matter was given to a Harare investigator.
