State of football report under SRC spotlight

THE Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) board will meet in Harare tomorrow to deliberate on the findings of the committee tasked with inquiring on the state of football in Zimbabwe. The committee was led by commissioner Obadiah Moyo and its mandate was to gather as much information as possible and wind up its business by July 31.

Commission spokesperson Tirivashe Nheweyembwa said after the deliberations, the board would then present its findings and resolutions to the parent Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture for final endorsement before they can be made public.

“The board will meet on Saturday (tomorrow) where it will receive and possibly adopt the report. There was an overwhelming response from members of the public and key football bodies so all that will be reviewed by the board,” said Nheweyembwa.

The commission was set up following embarrassing accusations and counter accusations at domestic football governing body Zifa that eventually led to the suspension of three board members, vice-president Omega Sibanda, Miriam Sibanda and Ben Gwarada.

Zifa president Cuthbert Dube has twice survived attempts to oust him, first by a group of disgruntled councillors that met on May 16. Fifa came to his rescue by declaring the meeting illegal.

Last month, a properly constituted meeting again resolved to boot Dube out of office, but Fifa representative Arshford Mamelodi was the stumbling block, telling stunned and angry councillors that there was a technical breach.

The meeting has since been rescheduled for October 3 in the capital and it’s almost certain that this time around Dube will be ejected from Zifa.
