THE Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening support and inclusion for Persons with Disabilities, adding that disability welfare remains a key national priority.
In a statement, Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Edgar Moyo said the ministry’s work is anchored on President Mnangagwa’s development philosophy of “leaving no one and no place behind,” which continues to guide efforts to expand equal opportunities for all citizens.
“We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the empowerment, dignity and inclusion of Persons with Disabilities,” he said.
“We continue to strengthen systems that ensure equal opportunities for all.”
Minister Moyo said the Department of Disability Affairs, established in 2018, derives its mandate from Section 83 of the Constitution, the National Disability Policy, and the Persons with Disabilities Act gazetted in November this year.
The department is responsible for coordinating the implementation of disability policies, promoting rights, and mainstreaming disability across Government programmes.
Minister Moyo said several support initiatives are already benefiting thousands of PWDs nationwide.
They include revolving loans and grants, disability vocational training fees support, vocational training centre placements, assistive devices, institutional grants and State service disablement benefits.
“These initiatives have enabled many persons with disabilities to access education, employment and economic opportunities.”
Minister Moyo urged civil society organisations, legislators and community leaders to intensify cooperation with Government in strengthening disability inclusion.
“We call for continued constructive dialogue and collaboration as we work towards an inclusive Zimbabwe where persons with disabilities enjoy dignity, independence and equal opportunity,” he said.
