POLICE sportspersons have been warned against abusing drugs.
Addressing the 2023 Provincial Police Sports ‘‘Propol’s Gala,’’ Officer Commanding Harare Province, Commissioner Wonder Tembo, said a dream team could only be made with players who shun drugs.
The players also need to have passion, team spirit and an unmatched ability to offer enduring support to their teammates.
“We shared lots of fun and entertainment together. We had a chance to meet and interact with one another.
“A friendship born on the field of athletics is the real gold of the competition.
“Awards become corroded but friends gather no dust.
“I want to warn all sportspersons and sundry to abstain from abusing drugs.”
Comm Tembo added:
“Researchers have revealed that drug abuse is high among sporting people as many erroneously believe that drugs enhance their performance.
“It needs not to be over emphasised that drugs have deadly effects on the health and life of the victims.
“Besides allowing us the opportunity to make friends and showcase talent, sport is a pedestal to physical and mental wellness.”
Police districts were competing in athletics, chess, darts, tennis, netball, football for men and women, as well as men’s and women’s volleyball.
A provincial select side would be put together to represent Harare in the Commissioner General’s Sports Gala to be held next month.
