What to do, oh what to do with this August holiday that has finally come? As the fun and excitement of the holiday continues to unroll, it is worth mentioning that responsible fun is the way to go this autumn break. Last week’s edition of the Cool Lifestyle carried an article on this subject. Without spoiling the fun, we are dishing out more tips this week in an effort urge teens to continue to be cautious as the holiday proceeds.
The swag centre is confident that the majority of teens are responsible but for the benefit of the handful who have a challenge in this area. The rest may add the following tips on the “do’s and don’ts” for this holiday.
Plan ahead
The holiday might seem long but the real situation is that it will be over before you know it. That said, first things first. Make a strategic plan and have time limits for all the tasks that you need to carry out. This helps you to avoid rushing through stuff last minute. Besides, it is cool to be organised.
It is also helpful to get holiday assignments out of the way.
Stick to teen stuff
When out and about with your crew, make it a point that you hang out with people your age. This might sound unimportant at this point but often, being in the wrong gang can land you into trouble.
You should also hang out in the places where you are authorised to. There are times when you feel the urge to sneak into nightclubs. The problem, however, is that you would be making yourself vulnerable to abuse. Better play it safe stick to what you are supposed to be doing.
Hands off drugs
Drugs and alcohol are not cool, no matter who is taking them. Do not be pressured into taking them otherwise one risks being “wasted”. Getting intoxicated exposes one to sexual and physical abuse. In extreme cases, teens may end up being abducted or murdered as one would not be aware of what is happening while drunk. The other problem comes when one gets “hooked’ and becomes addicted to these drugs or alcohol. One might end up spoiling his or her life for good.
Revisit your “to do” list
Use the holiday also to do all those things that you have been shelving over the last few weeks. This could be finishing a book, visiting a relative or taking up an activity. You cannot possibly spend the days sleeping now, can you? It is also refreshing to start the upcoming term on a clean slate, so get busy.
Peace begins with you
Lastly, let us all continue to live peacefully among ourselves. The message of peace is not only for grown-ups but Zimbabweans of all ages and creed.
Do as you are told and desist from fighting and bullying. Remember also to stand up for the vulnerable peers and report child abusers.
All said and done, make sure you make this holiday one to remember, do it responsibly though.
