EXAMINATIONS are an important period in every learner’s academic journey, but they often come at a time when life continues to happen.
Some students may face difficult situations such as a parent falling seriously ill, the death of a family member, financial challenges at home or health-related concerns. The ability to cope with these challenges can make a difference between giving up and successfully completing examinations.
When a parent or guardian becomes sick during examinations, learners may experience fear, anxiety and difficulty concentrating. It is important for students to remember that they are not alone.
They should communicate with trusted adults, teachers or school authorities who can provide emotional support and guidance.
Schools should create a supportive environment where learners can express their concerns while continuing with their studies.
The death of a family member is one of the most painful experiences a learner can go through. Grief can affect concentration, memory and motivation. Students should allow themselves time to grieve while also seeking counselling and support from family, teachers and friends.
They should not feel guilty for continuing with their education, because education can become a source of hope and strength during difficult times.
The girl child may also face unique challenges during examinations, including menstrual difficulties. Menstruation should never be a barrier to academic success. Girls should be prepared by carrying necessary sanitary materials, maintaining proper hygiene and seeking assistance when needed.
Schools and communities should continue promoting menstrual health awareness so that girls can participate confidently in learning and examinations.
During challenging moments, students should focus on what they can control. They can create a realistic study timetable, practise relaxation techniques, eat properly, get enough rest and approach examinations one step at a time.
Positive thinking and seeking support are important skills that help learners overcome stressful situations.
Parents, teachers and communities have a responsibility to support learners during examination periods. Academic success is not only about preparation with books it is also about emotional well-
being and resilience.
Students should remember that challenges are temporary, but their dreams and future goals remain important. With courage, support and determination, learners can overcome difficult circumstances and continue moving towards success.
