A 30-year-old stepfather from Gokwe Centre in the Midlands province has been arrested in connection with the murder of his four-month-old stepdaughter.
Midlands provincial police spokesperson Emmanuel Mahoko said the suspect, Last Maphosa, was living with his partner Princess Muchenje (18) and her infant daughter at Cheziya Red Roof Stands at Gokwe Centre.
He said early this month, Muchenje was unwell and left her daughter in Maphosa’s care.
“Maphosa took the baby to Kambasha Business Centre, allegedly to buy cigarettes, but returned home without her, claiming to have left her with his sister,” he said.
Asst Insp Mahoko said when Muchenje questioned this, Maphosa returned to the business centre and brought the baby back home, wrapped in a blanket, claiming she was asleep.
“However, when Muchenje went to feed her, she discovered the baby had died, leading to Maphosa arrest,” he said.
Maphosa was arrested and appeared in Gokwe Magistrates’ Court on 14 May 2025, with the case remanded to 28 May 2025.
Investigations are ongoing, and the police are appealing for public assistance to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.
