A 34-YEAR-OLD injiva from Bulawayo told a court his stepmother evicted him from her house after he neglected her while in South Africa. Phumelelo Khumalo of Gwabalanda suburb in Bulawayo told Western Commonage magistrate Abednico Ndebele that his stepmother, Mekeli Khumalo told him he should have remembered her while he was living high in Johannesburg.
“My stepmother told me it was never her intention to evict me from the house. She said we no longer showered her with gifts and we no longer buy her groceries in South Africa,” said Phumelelo.
Mekeli had dragged Phumelelo to court for allegedly stealing a room divider and two kitchen chairs from the house. Phumelelo pleaded guilty to theft. He was cautioned and discharged by Ndebele.
Mekeli told the court she had filed for an eviction order against Phumelelo in another court because he was disturbing her peace. “When he came back from South Africa he came and locked all the doors to the house and I was forced to move in with my cousin at Emganwini. I’m no longer comfortable living in the house. I’m afraid of him,” said Mekeli.
Ndebele advised Phumelelo to resolve issues with his stepmother. “Go and solve your problems with your mother and family. Learn to respect her,” said Ndebele.
Prosecuting, Maria John told the court that on an unknown date but during the period between November 3 and 16 this year, Phumelelo entered Mekeli’ s house in her absence.
“The accused person unlawfully took a room divider and two kitchen chairs during the complainant’s absence. Investigations were carried out leading to the arrest of the accused person. And the property was recovered,” said John.
