The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) has reacted swiftly by replacing the 30 iron manhole lids stolen in
Mhangura last week.
ZINWA spokesperson, Mrs Marjorie Munyonga said similar thefts and vandalism of infrastructure in other towns in the past.
“We have replaced the stolen iron manhole lids with precast reinforced ones as part of efforts to reduce cases of further theft
and vandalism as well as to ensure that the community is protected from the hazards associated with having open sewer
manholes,” she said.
ZINWA, she added, was considering various strategies, including stronger community engagements and improved
infrastructure security measures, such as the installation of concrete-reinforced manhole covers on all manholes as patterns
have shown that the theft and vandalism largely target iron and steel manholes.
On the issue of water, Mrs Munyonga said the parastatal was on a massive drive to install prepaid water meters.
“Zinwa intends to install these meters in all areas where it provides water to give water users greater convenience and control over their water consumption patterns,” she said
The rollout is being done in phases and to date more than 31 000 meters have been installed.
Mhangura is expected to be covered under the rollout.
