A HARARE magistrate warned a man, who had been evading police after defaulting on maintenance, to stop playing hide-and-seek.
Rodrick Marara was taken to court by his ex-wife, Sandra Gutsa, who said he last paid maintenance in 2020.
A warrant of arrest was issued, but Marara kept evading the police.
“The money is for the upkeep of your child, not the court.
“The only language grocery shops and schools speak is money, so stop playing hide-and-seek with the cops and man up to your responsibilities,” said magistrate Mashavira.
Sandra said their Grade Two child’s schoolwork was being affected by the lack of items, which were needed, which she could not afford.
“I had found sponsors for our child’s fees, but they can’t assist us anymore.
“They can only give us accommodation.
“I requested for an upward variation from $9 700 to US$100 to help me pay fees and buy groceries and stationary,” she said.
Marara offered US$20 saying he was unemployed and awas lso struggling to make ends meet.
“When l last appeared here, l was formally employed, but now things are not going well for me.
“I remarried and have another child so she should be considerate to my other family since l earn an average of US$80 a month.”
Magistrate Mashavira ordered Marara to pay US$50.
