Stop the mob psychology craze

Mob psychology, also known as crowd psychology or herd mentality, refers to the behavioural and psychological dynamics that occur when individuals are influenced by the collective behaviour of a group.

This phenomenon can lead to a variety of dangers. We have seen a number of cases where mob psychology has been employed, where some people have been assaulted by a mob, with such actions being recorded using cellphones and videos shared on social media. Some of those cases have led to loss of life, leaving some people in jail. Some victims have been left with permanent psychological scars after the attacks.

When mob action takes place, there is a loss of individual accountability. Individuals in a mob often feel a reduced sense of personal responsibility. This diffusion of responsibility can lead to actions that individuals might not normally consider if they were acting alone. Furthermore, there are heightened emotional states, where mobs can amplify emotions such as anger, fear, or excitement. This emotional contagion can lead to irrational and extreme behaviours, such as violence or panic.

Behaviour experts also say there is also de-individuation. In a crowd, people may lose their sense of individual identity, leading to behaviour that is more aggressive or destructive than usual. This de-individuation can result in a loss of self-awareness and a diminished sense of personal consequences. There is also imitative behaviour, where individuals in a mob are more likely to imitate the actions of others. If the crowd engages in destructive or harmful behaviour, individuals are more likely to follow suit without considering the consequences.

In addition, mob psychology leads to polarisation and extremism where crowd dynamics can lead to the polarisation of opinions and the adoption of more extreme positions. This can exacerbate conflicts and lead to more radical actions. There is also peer pressure and anonymity provided by the gang. Mobs by nature are difficult to control. As a result, the collective behaviour of the crowd can become unpredictable and unmanageable. Mobs can cause significant physical damage to property and harm to individuals. Riots, looting, and vandalism are common outcomes of mob actions.

It is against this background that we believe mob psychology and mob action should be discouraged at all costs. The consequences of mob action have been dire in most cases, leading to undesirable outcomes for those caught at the forefront of mob action. Understanding the dangers of mob psychology is crucial for both individuals and authorities to prevent and mitigate the harmful effects that can arise from collective behaviour.
