Household property worth thousands of dollars and powerline installations were destroyed in Chinhoyi last week following heavy rains and strong winds. As a result of the storm, Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital lost water and power supplies, putting the lives of patients at risk. Some shops and homes had their roofs blown away by the winds which also uprooted trees.
Makonde district medical officer Dr Gift Masocha said Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital was now relying on generators because of the disruption of power.
Mrs Theresa Kumbirai of Cold Stream suburb said the heavy winds blew away the roof of her lodgings and she had to source a tent for the night. “The situation was scary as it started raining when we least expected it,” she said.
“The rains were accompanied by heavy winds such that we could feel the impact inside the house.” The Meteorological Services Department has predicted El Nino current could result in flash floods.
The district civil protection unit led by Makonde district administrator Mrs Plaxedes Chirongoma is in the process of assessing the damage caused by the storm.
