An 18-year-old student, Betty Gurupira, believes that female students can excel in academics if they receive maximum support from their guardians and school authorities.
Gurupira, who scored 20 points in the 2024 ZIMSEC Examinations, aspires to study Actuarial Sciences.
A proud graduate of Munashe High School in Mutoko, Mashonaland East, she studied Pure Mathematics, Statistics, Business Studies, and Accounts.
In an interview with The Herald on Saturday Lifestyle, Gurupira urged girls to work hard in their studies and break barriers.
“Times have changed, and stereotypes have been broken. Women are breaking barriers; we are champions and beacons of hope. I must say I’m proud of the woman I’m becoming, seeing my dreams come into reality.
“My focus now is to study Actuarial Sciences at university after this achievement at Advanced Level, which came out of hard work and focus.
“It was very challenging to manage passing four subjects at A Level, but I used several strategies to tackle these subjects,” she said.
Outlining her strategy to help other aspiring learners studying at Advanced Level, Gurupira was blunt:
“I created a study schedule where I planned when and how long I would study for each subject to ensure I created a balance.
“I developed the use of a planner, which helped me stay organized and keep track of deadlines set by my teachers.
“During the study period, I prioritized focusing on the most challenging subjects or topics first.
“I dealt with the material by summarizing notes in my own words.”
She continued:
“Before and after studies, I used separate notebooks and folders to keep notes and materials for each subject organized and easily accessible.
“I kept a ‘to-do’ list where I wrote down tasks and deadlines for each subject to help me stay on track.
“After all, I wasn’t shy to seek help from others in areas where I had challenges because I knew what I wanted to achieve at the end of the day.”
She recalled how she used to consult teachers in areas where she faced challenges, a strategy that worked in her favour.
“I used to ask teachers when struggling with a particular concept or subject. I then formed a study group to review material, discuss challenging topics, and learn from one another.I also utilised online tutorials, videos, or study guides to supplement my learning,” she stressed.
