A 24-YEAR-OLD Chinhoyi University of Technology student has appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court facing fraud charges after allegedly duping investors of US$20 600 through a bogus online investment scheme.

Tanaka Kelly Miller of Rusununguko, Chinhoyi, appeared before the court following her arrest on July 4.

The State alleges that some time in September 2024, Miller and an accomplice created a WhatsApp group called CMD Fashions, posing as operators of a clothing business.

They allegedly advertised investment packages promising returns of between 40 and 70 percent within a matter of days to lure unsuspecting members of the public.

Prosecutors allege investors were instructed to deposit money into retail shop accounts in Harare’s central business district after being promised substantial profits.

She allegedly received the funds under the guise of investing them before surrendering the money to cashiers linked to the scheme, who are already facing separate charges.

Police investigations established that complainants were prejudiced of a total of US$20 600, and nothing has been recovered.

The matter came to light after detectives from the CID Commercial Crimes Division received information about the alleged investment scam and tracked down the accused.

Miller was released on US$100 bail and was ordered not to interfere with investigations and to reside at her known address.
