Students in First Street clean-up

Vista Vision College students teamed up with local talent show Starbrite in an operation called “First Street First Sunshine City” aimed at cleaning up the First Street Mall.
First Street Mall has been overtly taken over by illegal vendors. Stretching from Robert Mugabe Road to Samora Machel Avenue, the mall has become a pale shadow of its former self. If one wanted to see anything bad in its rightful colours, a walk in the mall would not disappoint. Scenes from the mall were now reminiscent of the ghetto in the central business district and it was fitting that the students teamed up to bring back the sparkle to the mall once revered for its glitter and splendour.

The operation commenced on March 24 and ended on March 29. Speaking to CLS some students applauded the initiative.

“We were removing posters, doing the flowerbeds and working on the pavements. We removed all posters. This is a good operation and it is making the free flow of human and vehicle traffic possible. The initiative will benefit the community economically and socially if wisely used. I advise communities to undertake waste projects; from environment forums or clubs that they may develop,” said Solomon Goredema (17) a Vista Vision College student. The Starbrite team comprised of 48 teenagers, all former Starbrite contestants and 2012 –2013 season contestants. – CL Reporter.
