HERENTALS Under-20 bounced back to winning ways in spectacular fashion with a 5-0 mauling of Chinhoyi Stars to take over pole spot in the ZIFA Northern Region Division One league.
The Students shrugged off last week’s surprise 1-0 loss to Golden Valley by making light work of Chinhoyi Stars.
The impressive Salif Cheya scored a hat-trick.
The win was the first victory for the Students since their return from the mid-season break.
Coach Paul Benza was impressed by the response from his charges who were clinical in front of goal.
“I’m very happy with the team’s performance considering that scoring has been our handicap and getting five is good for us.
“I emphasised on burying the game in the first half as we hoped to get chances and we did just that with the first goal coming in 34 seconds,” said Benza.
The comprehensive victory saw the Students taking their points tally to 40 and a place at the top of the table.
They have played one game more than their title rivals, Simba and Golden Eagles.
The much anticipated showdown between Golden Eagles and Simba was postponed after the death of midfielder Barnabas Mushunje, who was buried at the weekend.
Chinhoyi Stars sit in 12th place with 18 points.
Benza said he was not putting himself under pressure to keep up with title-chasing teams.
“I am very happy because last week we got chances and missed.
“Salif Cheya, who missed some glorious chances, scored three today.
“We are not under any pressure for the championship and we will keep rotating our team to give every player a chance,” said Benza.
