First was state-owned PowerTel, a subsidiary of power utility Zesa Holdings, which announced a reduction in mobile broadband tariffs from US$50 to US$40 a month.
The company also slashed the price of a modem from US$30 from US$45 in a promotion which runs until January 31.
Not to be out done, Telecel announced that it has slashed international telecommunications tariffs from US$0,23 cents per minute to US$0,19 cents in a promotion running until January 25.
The company has reduced the charges for calls to 12 countries that include the United Kingdom, the United States, China, India, South Africa, Botswana and Malawi.
Econet Wireless, the country’s biggest mobile phone company in terms of subscribers, and NetOne are running a number of promotions, where customers are enjoying massive discounts on intra-network calls.
Reduction in prices of mobile phones and services after the country adopted multiple foreign currencies in 2009 has led to increasing competition among companies.
