THE SUNDAY MAIL journalist Theseus Shambare was last week adjudged the second runner-up in the inaugural Southern African Migration Management (SAMM) Project Labour Migration Media Competition.

Held in Cape Town, South Africa, the contest attracted over 60 entries from journalists across the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

Shambare’s entry, titled “R5 billion for ex-Wenela payouts”, stood out for its impact.
His winning piece brought to light the ongoing challenges faced by former Witwatersrand Native Labour Association miners in their pursuit of fair compensation.

The story also highlighted the plight of the former miners and their struggle to receive what they are owed.

United Nations Information Centre director Mr Masimba Tafirenyika applauded Shambare for the achievement.

“We commend Mr Shambare for his tireless efforts in promoting accurate and fair reporting on labour migration within the region,” Mr Tafirenyika said.

“This must be a push for him to achieve the bigger prize next year and the continental one.
“His dedication to telling the stories that need to be told is truly admirable, and we are grateful for such contributions to shaping the narrative on this critical issue.”

Shambare received a certificate of excellence, a gift and cash for his award.
Silas Nkala from Alpha Media Holdings landed the first prize, while Josef Phiri from the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation came second.

The competition, organised by the SAMM project, recognises and encourages excellence in reporting on labour migration in the SADC region, an area considered underreported.
