MAMELODI Sundowns have emerged as Africa’s top earners at the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup in the USA, cashing in a whopping $12.55 million despite crashing out in the group stages.
The South African giants walked away with the tidy sum thanks to a win and a draw that added $3 million on top of their $9.55 million participation fee.
The billion-dollar tournament saw four African teams — Sundowns, Tunisia’s Espérance, Egypt’s Al Ahly and Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca — battling it out, but none made it past the group stage.
Espérance and Al Ahly weren’t far behind the Brazilians in the money game. Both sides banked $11.55 million. Espérance managed a single win, while Al Ahly picked up two draws.
Wydad Casablanca, however, had a nightmare outing, losing all three of their matches and returning home with just the basic $9.55 million fee.
No glory on the field, but for Sundowns, the bank balance tells a different story!
