SUNGURA artist, Blessing Marezva, believes authentic sound is the identity of an artist.
Marezva said artists should strive to create their own sound and avoid imitating established brands.
“I am a great fan of the late Tongai ‘Dhewa’ Moyo and Leonard Dembo.
“I have realised there are artists who copy their art or even that of Macheso.
“This will limit creativity in the industry and might negatively affect our genre because consumers will have no variety to choose from us as sungura artists,” he told H-Metro.
The Chitungwiza-based musician said musicians should emulate sungura musicians from the past.
“Even Clive Mono Mukundu once said sungura artists used to have different sounds.
“For example, the likes of System Tazvida, Simon Chimbetu, John Chibadura, Leonard Dembo and others had their own signature in their sound.
“This is what we should do so that sungura goes far and becomes more attractive again on the market, rather than sounding the same,” he said.
Marezva is set to release his second album titled Shock Absorber this month.
The album carries six tracks namely — Vedzinza Rangu, Zvaunoda Ndozvidawo, Vanyararidzeiwo, Seiko Uchiri Bhachura, Muregerereiwo and Rudo Ndinokupa.
He records with Truetone Studios.
He released his debut album in 2019 called Zvine Simba.
Marezva began his musical career in 2018 with the two singles titled Zimbabwe Ndinodada Nayo and Zororai Vedzinza.
His last single was Mai Mike.
It was released in 2021 and it was voted for in the Top 20 Radio Zimbabwe chart and also featured in end-of-year Top 50 chart.
